FY’25 Elections

The Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics, DC Chapter, consists of a
President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. The Vice President serves as President-elect for consistency across the leadership transitions. The Secretary and Treasurer positions may be extended beyond their original elected position based on the needs of the chapter. Ideally, the Treasurer and Secretary are elected on alternating years. At-Large Board positions are also available for 2-year terms and are encouraged to run for executive positions during their term or immediately following their elected term, depending on chapter needs and their interest.

Open Positions for Fiscal Year ’25 (July 2024-June 2025): We are accepting candidates for the Vice President/President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary and at least 1 At-large board member positions now. These roles are essential to leading the Chapter by providing continuity for our organization and our mission to improve the health of DC’s children. Applications are requested starting May 1st. Elections will be held at the end of May, with ballots sent to all Chapter members for a vote and winners announced at the June Board Meeting. Duties will begin in July 2024.

These volunteer board positions typically require 5-7 hours of your time per month, with executive positions requiring more. Board members are required to attend bi-monthly board meetings and participate in the planning/execution of the Spring and Fall Symposia, as well as the annual Advocacy Day. The ideal candidates help to recruit chapter leaders and members as well as lead grant opportunities of their choice. Board members are eligible for grant stipends depending on their leadership role in the grant’s activities.

Vice President/President-Elect
  • Two-year term starting as the assistant to the President, or as determined by the President and/or the Board of Directors, in the absence or incapacity of the President, shall temporarily succeed to the duties of the President.
  • Upon completion of the Vice President term, shall assume the position of President for another two-year term, unless there is a 2/3 majority closed ballot vote by members of the Board of Directors who oppose the candidate.
  • A voting member of the Executive Committee.
  • Attends and participates in bi-monthly in-person Board meetings, as well Executive Committee meetings.
  • Helps plan and participates in the twice a year Chapter-wide meetings (symposia) and annual Advocacy Day.
  • Participate in chapter oversight including but not limited to chapter programs and activities, strategic planning, development, succession planning and decision making.
  • It is strongly recommended that nominees for Vice-President have recent experience as an active Board or Committee member of DC AAP.
Secretary
  • The Secretary shall be responsible for overseeing the keeping of an accurate record of the proceedings of all meetings of the Board of Directors, and any committee of the Board of Directors and shall give or cause to be given all notices in accordance with these Bylaws or as required by law, and, in general, shall perform all duties customary to the office of Secretary.

  • A voting member of the Executive Committee.

  • Participates in bi-monthly in-person Board meetings, as well Executive Committee conference calls.

  • The Secretary shall participate in the twice a year Chapter wide meetings.

  • The Secretary shall participate in chapter oversight including but not limited to chapter programs and activities, strategic planning, development, succession planning and decision making.

  • This is a two-year position with the option to run for re-election for additional terms.

Treasurer
  • Two-year term with the option to run for re-election for additional terms.
  • A voting member of the Executive Committee.
  • Participates in bi-monthly in-person Board meetings, as well Executive Committee conference calls.
  • Responsible for budget and monitoring Chapter’s financial activity on a monthly basis with meetings with bookkeeper, accountant and Executive Director.
  • Reviews monthly bank reconciliations and financial reports.
  • Reviews and updates financial policies and procedures.
  • Reviews Accounts Payable and Receivable regularly.
  • Authorizes checks and electronic payments to vendors.
  • Estimated time commitment is 5-7 hours a month depending on Chapter activities.
At‐Large Board Member
  • Two-year term with the option to run for re-election for additional terms.
  • At-Large Board Members are voting members of the Board, along with the Executive Committee.
  • Expected to attend and participate in every other month Board meetings and twice-a-year, chapter-wide meetings, plus yearly Advocacy Day.
  • Serve as chapter lead for at least one of the Chapter pillars (Advocacy, DEI, Organizational Health, Financial Health, Chapter Programmatic Focus).
  • Participate in the recruitment and retention of DC Chapter members.
  • Participate in Chapter oversight including but not limited to strategic planning and fundraising, including grant applications and management.
  • Each At-Large Board member should help plan one major chapter event (Fall or Spring Symposia or Advocacy Day) as well as encouraged to apply for at least one grant per year with support from the executive director and others. Board members may be eligible for a grant stipend.

Communications and Programs Internships

The DC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics is the Washington, DC chapter of the National American Academy of Pediatrics, a children’s health organization of 66,000 pediatricians. The DC Chapter has over 450 members and is dedicated to promoting the optimal health and development of children and adolescents of Washington, DC in partnership with their families and communities, and to support the pediatricians who care for them.

Internship Overview

DC AAP is seeking entrepreneurial, thoughtful, and creative interns. Candidates chosen will have attention to detail, display a passion for the health and well being of children, and feel comfortable with a virtual work experience. Our goal is to fuel the intern’s knowledge and passion on children’s health.

Communications Intern Requirements

Strong writing and communication skills. Must be available to intern for at least 60 days. Flexible schedule to work virtually. Trustworthy

Interns will create communication strategies for DC AAP’s priorities. They will work closely with DC AAP staff to strengthen priority projects.
Activities will include but not be limited to:

  • Create strategies for social media and the chapter’s website.
  • Gather news stories, conduct interviews and create original content for monthly member newsletter.
  • Assist in virtual and in person event planning.
  • Other communication activities based on interest and skill set.

Program Intern

Interns will work on immunization projects and grant projects in the District of Columbia. They will work closely with the DC AAP staff.

Activities will include but not be limited to:

  • Provide assistance in research to DC AAP committees on priority programs ∙ Assist in program development.
  • Assist DC AAP staff on program execution.
  • Provide support on virtual meetings and gatherings.
  • At the end of the internship period, the intern will have produced press releases, position fact sheets, news articles, blog posts and other materials that support the DC AAP.

Communications Committee Chair

The Communications chair serves as a spokesperson and communications consultant for the chapter and its grant activities. Working with the Executive Director and Chapter Leadership team.

Typical duties include:

  • Contributing editor to the chapter newsletter
  • Chapter website content collaborator and maintenance
  • Assist with social media content – Facebook, Instagram and X
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the chapter with media and consult with other representatives before media interviews
  • Review press releases and contribute content or quotes as needed for release to the media
  • Review legislative testimony for DC Council before releasing the content to the chapter members or the public

Membership Committee Chair

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the Membership Committee, which works closely with the executive leadership team and board to understand current  member interests and improve member engagement 

  • Work in collaboration with the Chapter’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion champions to support outreach to non-members and ensure a more diverse representation among chapter membership

  • Lead assessments of member interests and develop strategies to engage both members and non-members in educational programming, web content and other chapter resources

  • Conduct outreach to new members and work with the chapter Executive Director to analyze  membership trends and reporting
